Both offset and digital printing produce excellent results — but they work very differently, and choosing the wrong method for your job can cost you time and money. Here's how to decide.

What is Offset Printing?

Offset printing uses ink plates that transfer an image onto a rubber blanket, which then rolls it onto paper. It's the gold standard for large-volume print jobs. Once the plates are set up, the cost per unit drops significantly — making it extremely economical for runs of 500 copies or more. Offset printing also delivers superior colour consistency and is available on a wide range of paper stocks and packaging materials.

What is Digital Printing?

Digital printing works like a large, high-precision printer — no plates required. It's ideal for short runs (under 500 copies), variable data (personalised content), and quick turnarounds. It's more expensive per unit at scale, but since there's no setup cost, it's the right choice for small quantities or proofing.

Cost Comparison

Offset has a higher upfront cost (plate-making) but a much lower cost per unit at volume. Digital has zero setup cost but higher per-unit pricing. The crossover point is typically around 300–500 copies — below that, digital wins on cost; above it, offset wins.

Quality Comparison

Offset produces richer, more consistent colour with a wider range of specialty inks (Pantone, metallic, fluorescent). Digital is excellent for everyday CMYK work and has improved dramatically in quality. For premium packaging and high-end branding materials, offset is still the benchmark.

Which Should You Choose?

Choose Offset if: You need 500+ copies, you want the best colour accuracy, you're printing on specialty stocks or packaging, or you want the lowest possible cost per unit.

Choose Digital if: You need less than 500 copies, you need the job quickly, you want to test a design before a large run, or you need personalised content on each piece.
